The New Zealand Film Commission was established in 1978 by an Act of the New Zealand Parliament. It has the statutory responsibility "to encourage, participate and assist in the making, promotion, distribution and exhibition of films" made in New Zealand by New Zealanders on New Zealand subjects.
The Film Commission provides loans and equity financing to New Zealand film-makers to assist in the development and production of feature films and short films being made in New Zealand. The Film Commission does not itself produce films. The Film Commission is also active in the sales and marketing of New Zealand films, and it assists with training and professional development within the industry.
