Remembering Andrew Lesnie
On 27 April 2015 Andrew Lesnie ACS, ASC passed away in Sydney. Andrew started his career in 1978 after completing the cinematography course at AFTRS. Andrew had a long association with NZ, shooting a telemovie The Rainbow Warrior Conspiracy here in 1989 to be followed 10 years later by The Lord of The Rings trilogy, King Kong, The Lovely Bones, and The Hobbit trilogy. He won an Oscar and a BAFTA for his work on The Lord of the Rings.
A tragic loss to the filmmaking community, Andrew was an honorary New Zealander, having spent the last 14 years collaborating with Peter Jackson. The journeys he undertook with Peter were always massive undertakings; huge creative endeavours that Andrew filled with extraordinary energy and ideas. Andrew has helped shape the changes in the NZ film industry and mentored a large number of the technicians that have made us a powerful force on the international stage. He will be missed.
