Remembering Marc Mateo

Marc Mateo, a beloved cinematographer and mentor, passed away in 2015, leaving a lasting impact on the NZ film industry.

The NZ film industry sadly lost loved and respected friend and colleague Marc Mateo on 12 June 2015.

Marc was known and worked with many of you over the past 25 years. A passionate man, Marc would immerse himself in anything cinematic that gave him a chance to create a story that would come to life on the screen. Beginning his career in the lighting department, first as a lighting assistant then as a gaffer on drama, music videos, and television commercials, Marc’s true desire, goal, and destination was in camera. For the past nine years, Marc had been living his ultimate dream following this passion, shooting stunning pictures and telling stories from the eye of the camera in his role as cinematographer. Over the years he inspired, encouraged, and mentored many with his aptitude, enthusiasm, and energy and was always keen to donate his time and skill to anyone young looking to learn from his experience. Marc was such a uniquely multi-dimensional talent, it is hard to do justice to the many endearing qualities that Marc has left us. For those who knew him, we will forever remember his staunch determination, inspired creativity, dedication, cheeky wit, kindness, and generosity. It is with sadness that we say goodbye to another brother in our family of film technicians.

Marc has gone too soon and will be missed by so many.
