Wellington's Film Industry Rhythm

Despite Avatar’s dominance, Wellington’s film industry faces uncertainty, with sporadic work and future opportunities.

Wellington has settled into a rhythm over the last few months. There’s Avatar, sucking up maybe 75% of the region's techos, production staff, and capacity. And then there’s everyone else, getting by on sporadic streams of TVCs, low and mid-budget feature shoots, and a few decent little TV jobs – What We Do in the Shadows especially, to keep dinner on the table for the rest. But, for everyone outside of the Avatar machine, life is precarious, and I’m not surprised that some of our best are up in Auckland for the foreseeable future.

Looking ahead, we know there is a steady supply of work coming, and rumours (aren’t there always?) of a couple of immense projects coming to town. But, rumours take years, if ever, to solidify and translate into pay packets. If you are busy, that’s great. But if you’re not, take the time to get your CV as up to date as possible.
