Wellington's Filmmaking Buzz

Successes like What We Do in the Shadows and rumors of big projects fuel excitement.

Things are pretty quiet again, after a not bad few months. We’ve hosted a couple of decent commercial shoots in and around town, and we’ve all seen some of our work on screen recently too. The huge success of What We Do in the Shadows has been a nice hometown buzz to be a part of, while Rob Sarkie’s TV movie Consent turned out quite brilliantly. The film festival, as always, exposed a few more thousand people to just how much good filmmaking goes on in NZ, and we like to think in and around Wellington in particular. Right now, we’re back to waiting for the other shoe to drop, again. Avalon studios have two or three mid-budget features and perhaps an international TV show to announce, but not quite yet. Meanwhile, rumors of what is coming to Miramar (not just Avatar) are quite insane. We’re pretty sure there’s a massive Disney project waiting in the wings, hopefully you’ll read all about it before the next quarter is finished. In the meantime, Thunderbirds is still shooting, Jason Stutter has just wrapped his new horror movie, and plenty of Wellingtonians have invaded the South Island to work on the international feature The Light Between Oceans. Crew Wellington has been busy, with plenty of good new people joining. We’re hard out building a new site (www.crewsouth.co.nz) for the Christchurch/Nelson/Dunedin and Queenstown crew now, at the request of several mainlanders. It’ll be up and running in a week or two. Watch this space.
